I was abused by therapists and physicians at Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center, and Foresight Mental Health clinic, for nearly the entire length of my insurance policy in 2020. I was humiliated, gaslighted, neglected, betrayed, exploited, and lied to during my abuse in inpatient psychiatric care. My life has been utterly destroyed by these circumstances, and I would be devastated to discover that someone else is facing the same mistreatment that I did, all because I didn't speak up. A Kaiser Permanente mental health therapist ended her own life. Kaiser's attorney blames me for it.
Yes, you read that right.
Hideous supervillain and one of KP's favorite malpractice attorneys, Jason Curliano, has quite literally alleged, in so many words, that I am responsible for the death of a KP employee. Chelsea Leigh Carroll (née Sloane) was a marriage and family therapist at KP San Rafael who reportedly chose to end her life over the course of the years-long arbitration case I filed against her and several others at that facility. The case has been ongoing for over 4 years and counting.
If it weren't such a sick thing in general for one human being to blame another for the self-inflicted death of a third person, it would still be incredibly ironic in this particular situation. My case against Kaiser surrounds an unlawful psychiatric detention in which Chelsea was abusive and retaliated against me while in KP's care. Isaiah Chase, MD; Haleh Kashani, PhD; Kerry Savola-Levin, MSW; Emily Bliss-Gerber, PhD; and Lindsey Hockridge, MFT, also contributed to my abuse.
Why Kaiser and their legal counsel would accuse me of something this disgusting is beyond me, particularly because it could be argued that Chelsea may have done this due to guilt or shame about what she did to me. It also calls into question why Kaiser would staff someone like Chelsea in their emergency room, and whether her mental state may have impaired her ability to do her very high-stakes job.
My point in sharing this is to remind everyone that Kaiser Permanente is a depraved organization that is beyond repair. They have lost their way. To openly accuse a formed mental health patient and abuse victim the way that Jason Curliano did is unacceptable, and it goes far beyond what should be allowed in a legal proceeding.
For anyone that has been mistreated by Kaiser and wants to ruin their day, feel free to call them and ask them why they're allowing their attorney to accuse a former patient of causing a therapist to end herself. Better yet, you can always call Jason's firm, Buty & Curliano, directly at (510) 267-3000, and let them know that his behavior is deplorable. The more we stand up to these people, the less they will get away with in the future.

It's no secret that Kaiser Permanente members receive terrible mental health care. Recently, comedian Colin Braun (@braunaroll on Instagram) shared his experience with Kaiser's pathetic care model, where patient needs are completely ignored regardless of the consequences. In a move that almost surely caused their PR reps to rage-quit on the spot, an unnamed Kaiser "executive" allegedly met with Braun to discuss what Kaiser could improve about their mental health care...as if they don't know based on the historic strike by their own clinicians and years of people coming forward about their mistreatment. While it's highly likely that nothing will come of that meeting, it's great to hear others speaking out about the terrible care they have received. As more people do, Kaiser will have to make changes.
Get to know the "attorneys" defending my abusers: Jason Curliano and Collin Wayne
As is the case for most abuse victims who dare to seek justice, my experience of the legal process has been a traumatizing and draining form of punishment all on its own. This has largely been thanks to two lawyers, neither a soul nor a spine between them, who are determined to keep the facts of this case quiet.
It doesn't take much time on Google to discover that Jason Curliano, a man with the congeniality and temperament of the Wicked Witch of the West, is Kaiser's go-to useful idiot. For years, this inbred Atlantic wolffish has engaged in breathtakingly incoherent behavior that has defied all notions of decency and integrity. What he brings to this case is largely limited to toddler-esque obstructionism, selective outrage, and egomania. After crawling into Daddy Kaiser's lap every few days, lying through his teeth for their head pats and praise, this lead-poisoned Kindergartener returns home to Hell, where he plots even more unhinged ways to drag the entire organization down there with him.
Collin Wayne is Kaiser's lapdog's lapdog, obsequiously and tragically parroting Jason at every turn. All that applies to Jason will apply to him in due time, once a single brain cell finally (hopefully) germinates within his exceptionally thick skull.
Despite the unrelenting efforts of this incompetent duo to maintain the status quo at Kaiser, I remain committed to warning the public about my abuse. No victim deserves to suffer at the hands of their health care providers, much less the two wastes of oxygen on their payroll.
75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees begin the largest health care worker strike in US history
On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, more than 75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees launched a strike across its many facilities in California, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia, Washington and Washington, D.C. Affected staff includes nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and other union members on the front lines. The strike is anticipated to continue through October 7.
According to the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions (which includes IFPTE, OPEIU, SEIU, and UHW), Kaiser Permanente has been largely unwilling to negotiate in good faith. They have refused to address worker concerns related to safe staffing, suboptimal wages, timely access to care, and subcontracting and outsourcing. This is not the first time Kaiser has turned its back on its workers when they have tried to advocate for their patients; in 2022, Kaiser mental health therapists and clinicians with NUHW held a historic strike to protest the health system’s non-compliant, illegal practices within its mental health clinics and inpatient psychiatric care centers.
The issues raised by these unions highlight the systemic failings of Kaiser Permanente to properly care for the people within their organization- both the workforce and the patients. Union members have routinely sounded the alarm regarding Kaiser’s lack of regard for the law, alleging that Kaiser is not in compliance with state and national regulations that ensure patients are cared for safely and promptly. This is especially true in California, where patients like me have been denied mental health treatment. Psychiatric care at Kaiser Permanente is subhuman, delayed, and undignified due to their greed and poor business decisions. This continues to be as serious of an issues now as it was when I was abused in 2020. Issues at the core of this current strike have a direct impact on patient access to adequate mental and behavioral health care, and lead to continued psychiatric abuse when left unaddressed. Though Kaiser shows no sign of stopping its mental health abuse toward vulnerable Americans, we can certainly take a stand and demand justice.
In the sprit of justice, accountability, and system change, I will continue to share the names of my abusers, who have no place at Kaiser Permanente or in healthcare generally: Isaiah Wattenberg Chase. Lindsey Hockridge. Chelsea Sloane Carroll. Emily Bliss-Gerber. and Kerry Savola-Levin. No change in staffing support or ratios will ever transform you into safe providers.
